Shock (or lack thereof) to the system

So here's the plan...
Get together with a group of old college buddies, grab the bikes, and ride a fifteen mile loop as many times as possible in 24 hours. Sounds fun, right?

Let me say this, I have a good deal more respect for mountain bikes with full suspension. Not only does mine not have full suspension, it closely resembles a work of art built in tribute to the John Tomac/Ned Overend days of off road glory. My bike is really old. The fork suspension barely manages to travel an inch. Probably because I haven't cleaned the sucker out for a while.

For those of you new to this spectacle, let me say that it is part camping, part bike race, part Woodstock (without the mind altering substances, I think). To ride it is to suffer (depending on your level of insanity to push your pace). A 4-5 person team is tough, a 2 person insane, and a solo, well, suicide. I'm not even going to talk about the lunatic on the unicycle...

What a great way to force your inconsistent training program into high gear by bouncing anerobically all over Riverside State park, at times in the dead of night, trying to either pass the rider in the distance, or hold off the machine gaining ground.

All in all, had a great time. Now that I can sit up.

Word of advice, don't take the advice of the guy who tells you that you'll be ok with only handlebar mounted lights. It's a dirty, dirty lie.

Now where's my road bike?

  1. Nice Pat! I thought you were not going to do this. You should have told me...I would have done a couple laps for you, or loaned you a couple lights.
